Issue 86 - March 2019
David Roberts: I enjoyed reading your item on including people in landscape photographs, in Issue 83 - December 2018, and it inspired me to send in two images I took last June while on holiday with my wife in North Cornwall. It was a lovely summer evening and as we walked down to the beach at Sandymouth I saw two figures farther out on the beach. I managed to get two quick grab shots before they moved out of the scene.
DN: I’m so glad to hear my piece on figures in the landscape was of interest David. It works, doesn’t it? Considering your lovely image here it just wouldn’t be the same without that couple on the beach, would it? You’ve positioned them perfectly too; just look at how the headland, rocks and clouds above all integrate and move the eye into the frame towards the figures. You say this is a grab shot but the composition betrays considered if hasty consideration, while the contrast and colours are subtle and well processed. It’s a picture that appeals more and more as I look at it; well done, and keep including figures when appropriate!
