Nikon Z7 Field Trial

Nikon has finally taken a huge step into the mirrorless world. What does Ross make of the much-lauded launch?

Before I share my experience of using Nikon’s new full-frame Z7, let me begin with a small disclaimer. This is my first venture into using a mirrorless camera. My prior experience of them has been restricted to playing with clients’ cameras during workshops. Therefore, I can’t really offer any kind of comparison with its competitors – for example, the Sony A7R III or the new Canon EOS R. Also, you should know that I am not a photographer in any great rush to abandon my SLR system. Yes, a lighter camera and system is appealing, but I like the ergonomics of my current camera and don’t find the weight of my system prohibitive – although give it a few more years and I might! The path to mirrorless is an inevitable journey – a matter of when, not if. But as I’m perfectly happy with my current set-up, I’ve not been one of the Nikon diehards impatiently waiting for Nikon to finally enter this sector of the camera market in order to buy a shiny new camera. I guess what I’m trying to say is that this field test of the Nikon Z7 will hopefully be an honest and objective one.
