The Pipe Line - Myanmar

Part Two: From Hsipaw to Hpa-an

In part two of his report, Ben Pipe takes us through the misty landscapes of northern Myanmar, from the morning markets of Hsipaw to the paddy fields of Hpan-an

A cold minibus ferries me through the night, from Mandalay to the town of Hsipaw. Highway 3 is the main trading route from China to Myanmar, so the road is packed with trucks carrying their cargo from Chinese warehouses. By the time I arrive I’m shivering and tired, and a cold shower does little to help. Arriving in such circumstances its easy to write off a place and wonder why you’ve travelled so far, but in the bright sunlight of the new day Hsipaw looks completely different.
