Right or Wrong?


Should you pay someone for the privilege of shooting their portrait on the streets? Or does this destroy the authenticity of the moment? It’s a tricky question, isn’t it?


A chat in the F11 office recently revealed a controversial question: when shooting travel photography, is it acceptable to pay someone for a portrait? It’s not as straightforward a topic as you might first think. Even if you have a knee-jerk instant answer, it’s easy to think of a hypothetical situation that destroys your reasoning. We asked three photographers for their input, in the hope of arriving at some kind of conclusion.
