Uncovering Iceland's Magic

I first visited Iceland in 2008, and used the whole summer season there to work for the Wild Wonders of Europe project – an initiative to photograph the most beautiful landscapes and charismatic wildlife in Europe then introduce the resulting images to the world through books, exhibitions and presentations at www.wild-wonders.com. As usual, I was travelling together with my husband Erlend Haarberg, also a freelance nature photographer, with whom I’ve been working as a team since we met in 2004.

We’d become fascinated by Iceland on this first trip, so we frequently returned in the years to follow. We explored the island with our Volkswagen Crafter, which was built in to meet our special needs as photographers. It served as our home during the travels, although we also spent a couple of weeks in our tent, in a research station at Lake Mývatn, and in remote cabins in the West Fjords and in the highlands. Altogether we’ve spent ten months in Iceland since 2008, experiencing its dramatic nature in all four seasons.
