Thera, 1,628 BC
1,628 BC: the earth moved. There are no surviving eyewitness reports of course, but we can be sure that the event took place. This was, after all, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. In all probability the resultant gigantic tsunami led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km to the south. Another theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the Atlantis legend.
