Behind the Lens
A Winter of Content
15 December 2016
West Bay, on the Jurassic Coast; a location I know well, but inexplicably have never photographed. I left Milborne Port in crisp sunshine, but here it’s a dull and grey day. Oh well, this will serve as a useful refresher location search, not to mention lunch out. In the café on the beach I’m dismayed to realize that I qualify for the Silver Surfer’s Meal Deal. Then I’m mortified when the waitress feels no need to ask for proof.
16 December 2016
I’m back in West Bay; this time on a bright winter’s day before Christmas. I’m too early really – it’s still only midday – so I sit on the pier eating fish and chips with predatory sea gulls perched on lamp posts and railings all around me, keenly watching, and waiting…waiting. It’s like a scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds. But the sun is out, higher than I’d like, yes, but this being late December, not so high as to be unusable. So I devour my cod in batter and head down the beach to set up with the waves breaking around the feet of the tripod. A huge bank of cloud is approaching from out to sea; I don’t have long.
