Stepping Back

Stepping Back

Isle of Skye, December 2010

David Noton recalls an evocative Christmas on the Isle of Skye.

The days are short on the Isle of Skye in late December. With sunrise at 0906 we had ample time for a leisurely breakfast before heading out on the dawn patrol. The banner image at the top of this page, for example, of Glen Sligachan on Christmas Eve, 2010 was shot at 0923 as the winter twilight still lingered. Less then seven hours of daylight followed, during which the sun was never high in the sky. With sunset at 1545 we were back in our cabin lighting the fire with the sky pitch black outside well in time for the evening news. No matter how good the light lack of sleep was never a problem on that trip.
