The St Lawrence River

The mighty St Lawrence, one of the world’s great river systems, provides the backdrop and inspiration
for David and Wendy Noton on their Quebecois adventure.

From Trois Pistoles the north side is barely visible. I ponder as we wait to board the ferry; when does a river become an estuary, a bay, and a Gulf? The crossing to Les Escoumins takes the best part of two hours under leaden skies, and we spend most of the time on deck with binoculars poised, but see not a spout. Neither do we see much shipping; just one coastal tanker away astern. So, my plan to start this feature by waxing lyrical about the mighty St Lawrence busy with marine traffic and a thriving whale population looks shaky. But then again reality rarely conforms to script.
